My research focuses on the hows and whys of people's social media practices, with a particular emphasis on visuality, sex and political participation. The overarching questions I tend to ask are about identity, community, norms and power. Beyond trying to make sense of what people are doing on and with the social media, how, and why, I am a proud methods-head, always thinking, often teaching and sometimes publishing on research methods and digital research ethics. My pet projects and new emerging research interests lie with fandom, governance, the technologies of wellbeing and self-care.
I am currently leading an international research project on visual digital trust (TRAVIS) and leading the Participatory Wellbeing Research Group of the newly funded Estonian Center of Excellence of Well-Being Sciences. Take a look at the RESEARCH tab for more info on these. In 2023 I also serve as Professor II at the Department of Media and Communication of the University of Oslo.
